Duties: This position is located in the Anesthesiology Department, Surgical Service, Albany Stratton VA Medical Center, Albany, New York and is responsible for providing a broad range of anesthesiology interventions to Veterans receiving care at the VAMC. Duties and responsibilities are carried out throughout the Medical Center. The incumbent follows established guidelines, ethics, and policies and protocols of the Department of Anesthesiology, Department of VHA, and the profession. Each Anesthesiologist functions as a cooperative and collegial team member with the entire staff. Specifically:
The Anesthesiologist is responsible for direct supervision of perioperative anesthetic care to patients, including preoperative assessment, intraoperative anesthetic administration and monitoring, and post-anesthesia care, in compliance with national accreditation standards. Types of surgeries include but are not limited to: general surgery, orthopedics, plastics, ophthalmology, diabetic foot, and oral surgery. Assignment will include rotational on-call coverage.
The Anesthesiologist provides anesthesia-related direct patient care in all functional areas of the OR, PACU, ICU ward and clinic settings as needed.
The Anesthesiologist must meet anesthesia-related documentation requirements set forth by Joint Commission and participates in development and implementation of program planning, objectives, policies and standards essential to delivery of quality anesthetic care.
The Anesthesiologist is responsible for maintaining current clinical privileges and keeping licensure, CPR/ACLS, and all other appropriate documents up to date.
Alternative or collateral duties may include management of a subsection of anesthesiology patients, with the subsection being defined either by a disease status (e.g. gastroenterology patients, chronic pain management patients), or demographic status (women veterans, OIF/OEF veterans, employees etc). Typically these duties are designated at the time of joining but may be assigned in the course of employment in response to new initiatives.

Citizenship of the United States. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with Department of Veterans Affairs policy.
Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Must be registered with the Selective Service System if a male born January 1, 1960 or after.

Physical Requirements: Thephysicianshould be physically and mentally capable to perform the duties of the position including examinations, formulate the diagnosis and treatment plan and educate residents. Physical activities include sitting, standing (up to4 hours)walking (up to 2 hours),heavy lifting (45 pounds or over), reaching above the shoulder, and repeated bending.
