Central Texas Veterans Health Care System (CTVHCS), Temple, Texas is seeking a full-time, BE/BC gastroenterologist to serve as Section Chief, Gastroenterology. The incumbent will report to the Associate Chief of Staff for Medical Service and will lead the Gastroenterology and Hepatology programs at both the Temple and Austin facilities. One of the major administrative responsibilities of the Section Chief will be to ensure timely access to all GI consults including those from community based outpatient clinics.
The GI section currently offers general gastroenterology and hepatology services in both inpatient and outpatient settings. We also have capabilities and expertise in performing advanced endoscopy procedures. The section chief will be responsible for sustaining and enhancing these services. CTVHCS has strong and expanding academic programs. We are one of the major teaching sites for Baylor Scott and White residency and fellowship programs and Texas A&M medical student education. The Section Chief will be expected to work closely with the respective institution to maintain and enhance the fellowship programs in both Gastroenterology. Academic appointment at Texas A&M School of Medicine is required for all teaching staff.
The Section Chief will spend the majority of time in clinical work. Incumbent will also be required to participate in the on-call schedule, supervision of GI fellows, review and triage consult referrals, and to apply National and VA guidelines to patient screening, patient surveillance and management of GI disorders.

Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are: (1) Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted, or (2) Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) of the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted. (3) For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, facility officials must verify with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) that the applicant has met requirements for certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant.
Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
Completion of residency training or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs, in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA Physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.)
Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Current board certification in gastroenterology is highly desired because CTVHCS is affiliated with Texas A&M University Health Science Center andhas an active teaching program
Our VA manages a significant number of veterans with chronic liver diseases; therefore, it is preferred applicants have Hepatology experience.
Since we have an academic gastroenterology program, prior academic experience is preferred.
Due to the administrative/management duties of this position it is also preferred that candidates have current or previoussupervisory experience.
