Gastroenterology Fellowship Program Director - Carilion Clinic

Carilion Clinic in Roanoke Virginia is accepting applications for the position of Section of Gastroenterology Fellowship Program Director in the Department of Medicine. The position includes an appointment at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine at the academic rank of Assistant, Associate, or Professor of Internal Medicine based on the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate. The Program Director is expected to direct the education of the fellows with oversight and responsibility of the core faculty and the corresponding budget. This position includes protected time for both the program director and associate program director, both of whom work closely with an experienced program manager. The successful applicant must have an MD or DO degree, current ABIM or AOBIM certification in Gastroenterology, and a minimum of three years’ experience in residency administration and education.

The clinical inpatient service promotes the fellow as a teacher of participating medical students, Internal Medicine residents, and other allied health students from Carilion Radford University. Preference will be given to applicants whose vision for residency training aligns with the Carilion Clinic Section of Gastroenterology mission of harnessing our unique geography, diverse patient population, and innovative health care delivery model to train physician-leaders who excel in any setting and are dedicated to their patients and community through compassion, humility, education, and service.

The Gastroenterology section staffs Carilion’s flagship hospital, Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital (CRMH), an 835-bed facility. It is one of the largest hospitals in Virginia and the only Level 1 Trauma Center in the region. The section also staffs the Carilion New River Medical Center, a 150-bed facility in Radford, Virginia. Ambulatory care in Roanoke is provided on the Riverside Circle campus, which is adjacent to CRMH and home to the fellow’s offices and didactic facilities. Riverside Circle also encompasses the Medical School and the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute. Overall, patients are seen at practices in Roanoke, Christiansburg, and Radford, and procedures performed at two locations in Roanoke and three locations in the New River Valley.

The Gastroenterology section is comprised of 15 adult Gastroenterologists, 13 Advanced Care Providers, and one registered dietician. The Division is undergoing expansion and positions are available for General GI and those with focused interests in Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Hepatology, Motility and Nutrition.

The fellowship program has recently been approved to expand its cohort from six to twelve fellows; four new fellows will matriculate in July 2022. The Gastroenterology fellows have performed consistently well on in-training examinations and have a 100% first-time board pass rate. Fifty percent have gone on to a fourth year of specialty training and 50% are employed at academic institutions.

Carilion Clinic, along with other partners in Virginia, was awarded a Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) from the National Institutes of Health. The Gastroenterology faculty are funded by grants from various sources including the Carilion Foundation, CTSA, and industry-funded and investigator-initiated clinical trials. The evolution of the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute, a $200M translational research center, supports important collaborations that enhance our research activities.
