The Division is one of the nation’s largest research facilities outside of a government or university setting. We are the primary professional home of more than 60 research scientists and 600 staff members who lead studies in epidemiology, health services, and clinical trials. Our studies cover a wide range of clinical topics, including cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, substance abuse, mental health, maternal and child health, and women’s health. Our research addresses broad issues, including the role of genes and the environment in health, the influence of behavior on disease prevention and chronic illness management, drug safety, health care policy, health services delivery, and disparities. We have almost 400 ongoing projects and contribute more than 500 scientific papers to peer-reviewed journals each year.

Newsweek magazine's "Best Maternity Hospitals 2026" named 13 Kaiser Permanente medical centers in Northern California as top in the nation for maternity care — an amazing feat, considering we delivered nearly 40,000 babies in 2025 alone. We've received this recognition 7 years in a row.
2025-26 report card: Highest-rated care in Northern California
Kaiser Permanente Northern California received 5 stars, the highest rating in the state, from the California Center for Data Insights and Innovation (CDII) for providing patients with high-quality clinical care and behavioral and mental health care in its latest annual ratings.
Excellent geriatric health and surgery
Thirteen of our medical centers have received Level 1 Comprehensive Excellence Geriatric Surgery Verification from the American College of Surgeons. This prestigious verification is awarded to hospitals that fulfill 30 mandatory quality standards. Also, 7 medical centers received the highest designation for age-friendly health care from the Institute for Healthcare Improvement.
High-quality stroke and cardiac care
We have long embraced clinical practices that help speed up recovery, diminish disabilities, and reduce deaths among people who suffer from strokes and cardiac events. The American Heart Association recognized all 21 Kaiser Permanente medical centers in Northern California in 2025 for specific quality achievement measures when treating stroke patients.
National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers
Three Kaiser Permanente medical centers in Northern California were accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers for providing the best possible care to patients with diseases of the breast. Each center must undergo a rigorous evaluation and review of its performance and compliance with the program's standards.
National Committee for Quality Assurance
More than 170 Kaiser Permanente medical practices in California are certified as Patient-Centered Medical Homes by NCQA, an honor that recognizes primary care medical practices that embrace a patient-centered approach to care and are committed to continuous quality improvement.
Nationally recognized for early medical alerts
In 2022, The Joint Commission and National Quality Forum recognized our Advance Alert Monitor program — a leading-edge system that predicts when hospitalized patients are at risk of clinical deterioration — with the John M. Eisenberg Award for Local Level Innovation in Patient Safety and Quality. The system was developed by Permanente physicians and researchers.

Shareholder track
